Yuga Labs has hired its first chief gaming officer, Spencer Tucker, to oversee the company’s gaming initiatives and Otherside metaverse. He specialises in game development, design, UGC, web3, and creative community involvement.

Tucker joins Yuga with two decades of experience in the gaming industry. Prior to joining Yuga Labs, he was president of games at Scopely, a global interactive entertainment and mobile-first games company that’s home to many top-grossing franchises including “Star Trek™ Fleet Command,” “MARVEL Strike Force,” “Scrabble® GO,” “WWE Champions” and more.

He started his career in the gaming industry in 2010 at Aeria Games & Entertainment, where he was executive producer for the fantasy genre and the game monetization and operations team, a division he created.

Tucker then moved on to product management roles at Glu Mobile in 2013, before being promoted to SVP of Studios, a position he held from 2014 – 2016. Following that, he was VP/GM, and then SVP of product at computer games company GREE International Entertainment.

“I believe the future of gaming will be powered by player ownership, social collaboration, and creative expression. Where players meet, meld and materialize worlds, content, art, and experiences as eclectic and exciting as the people that game within them,” Tucker wrote in a LinkedIn post announcing his new position.

Yuga’s newly formed C-suite role and Otherside’s First Trip Demo hint at its long-term vision to expand beyond being the home of blue-chip NFTs. The company has a flurry of initiatives in the coming months to show more of the gaming side of its business.

“Spencer brings a passion for and deep knowledge of gaming and shares our vision for the Otherside metaverse,” said Nicole Muniz, CEO of Yuga Labs. “Yuga today is known most prominently for being the home of Bored Ape Yacht Club, CryptoPunks, and Meebits, but Yuga is more than that. Gaming is one of our main focus areas. We are uniquely situated to revolutionize the way we all think about web3 gaming through core principles such as ownership, utility, community, and storytelling.”

Despite the bear market, Yuga Labs has grown from approximately 10 employees in January to over 70 today and will likely exceed 100 full-time employees by the end of the year. The company recently hired a new VP of product and has hired executives who have jumped ship from Google, Oculus, Twitter, Apple, Dune Games, Monolith Gaming, WB Gaming, Microsoft, Coinbase, and American Express.
