Thirdweb has announced the appointment of Atif Khan as its Global Head of Gaming. The web3 infrastructure startup is ramping up its blockchain gaming strategy after previously unveiling Web3 Warriors on Base, an NFT game it built from scratch.

Before joining Thirdweb, Khan spent eight years at Facebook, with his most recent role at the company being that of the Head of Mid-Market and In-App Ads for Global Gaming. Besides leading Thirdweb’s campaign for the mass adoption of web3 games, Khan also serves as an advisor to InfiniGods, a web3 gaming studio, building free-to-play games inspired by ancient mythologies.

Thirdweb offers a software developer toolkit for building decentralised apps including blockchain games, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs).

In March 2023, the company partnered with Shopify to launch a suite of web3 features that online retailers can leverage for their storefronts including enabling token-gated commerce, NFT loyalty programs, digital collectible sales, and more.

Last December, Thirdweb collaborated with crypto exchange platform Coinabse to launch GamingKit, a set of web3 tools that help developers to accelerate the game-making process, by reducing blockchain friction.

In August 2022, Thirdweb completed a $24 million Series A funding round backed by Haun Ventures, Polygon Labs, Coinbase Ventures, and Shopify, valuing the company at $160 million.

The company boasts a wide range of web3 gaming partners including Animoca Brands, Justin Kan’s Fractal, Rarible, and Gala Games, among others.

Last month, Thirdweb introduced its first web3 gaming title Web3 Warriors on Base, built from scratch. According to the Twitter post announcing the game, Thirdweb described it as “An on-chain survival game built by thirdweb which will completely transform your perception of Web3 Gaming.”

Thirdweb aims to offer a full-stack developer kit that includes all the tools developers need to build new blockchain games, including RPC nodes, asset minting, wallet creation, payments processing, marketplace creation, API and game engine tools.

“We want to build a great, one-stop shop tool that is comprehensive,” Khan told Decrypt, “so that developers don’t have to go to seven or eight different places.”
