The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) team, New York Liberty, has announced that it is dropping an NFT collection. It will be the first WNBA team to issue NFTs.

Due for release on May 7 in celebration of Liberty’s season-opening night with a match against the Connecticut Sun, the first drop will feature 400 NFTs of a video showcasing a rotating nail polish bottle in different colours dedicated to specific WNBA teams, each with a different serial number.

The NFT collection is powered by Polygon. According to New York Liberty, “this exclusive collection celebrates the ongoing cultural explosion of nail art through a unique Liberty lens.” There will be an exclusive NFT highlighting the team’s match on May 7.

“As we look to be a team on the cutting-edge of technology and fan experiences, launching the league’s first NFT was the natural progression of our business,” said Liberty CEO Keia Clarke. “NFTs are the future of one-of-a-kind collectibles, and this exclusive drop celebrates the intersection of nail art culture and sports through the lens of the New York Liberty.”

The team is opening up an exclusive whitelist for those who purchase a special ticket plus  NFT bundle in advance to the home opener. Whitelist participants will be airdropped an NFT for free by submitting their wallet address by May 1st, 2022 at 11:59PM EST.

Interested NFT buyers can mint an NFT for $50 starting on May 7 at 1pm EST at nft.nyliberty.com. In order to purchase the NFTs, tuyers would have to download a Coinbase wallet, connect it to Liberty’s NFT platform, and fund it with Polygon’s token, MATIC.

Owners can resell their Liberty Nail Art NFT on the secondary market on marketplaces such as OpenSea, LooksRare, and Rarible. Liberty will continue to drop more NFTs as part of the Nail Art 2022 Collection this year.
