Quick take:

  • Polygon’s zkEVM Mainnet is now live.
  • Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin revealed his first transaction on the platform on Monday.
  • The zkEVM is an infinitely scalable Ethereum solution powered by zero-knowledge proofs.

Polygon has launched the zkEVM (zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine) Mainnet. The Ethereum scaling solution is destined to allow developers to build massive computer-facing products enabling fast transactions whilst maintaining high-security levels.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin on Monday revealed he had sent his first transaction to zkEVM Mainnet.

Polygon has also made the repositories of the new Ethereum scaler open-source under an AGPL v3 licence. This will allow developers to modify, use, and distribute as they see fit.

The company believes that Ethereum scaling also means scaling the network’s core values including the open-source movement.

The AGPL v3 license requires developers who modify or distribute the Polygon zkEVM code to make their modifications open-source under the same AGPL v3 license or a more permissive one.

Announcing the launch of zkEVM Mainnet via a blog post on its website, Polygon wrote: “So choosing to open source Polygon zkEVM was a no-brainer, fulfilling a long-standing promise. With an innovative, modular design for a ZK-prover, Polygon zkEVM has revolutionized proof generation, for instance, and that technology can now be used by anyone under the terms of the license. But choosing which license has come with a number of considerations.”

The AGPL v3 license ensures that in addition to the current repositories, all future modifications and distributions remain open source, barring the code from being used for proprietary purposes.

Polygon has set aside a bug bounty of up to $1 million for those who document critical vulnerabilities.

This launch comes at the back of Polygon’s recent collaboration with fellow Ethereum scaler, Immutable for a new gaming infrastructure Immutable zkEVM. The two companies teamed up to scale the web3 gaming industry.

Polygon has created one of the biggest communities after sealing several partnerships with consumer-facing brands, while Immutable has created a platform that allows developers to easily build web3 games.

The zkEVM scaling solution will help developers build gaming and NFT projects that execute transactions fast without compromising the security levels provided by the Ethereum network.
