Quick take:

  • Immutable and Polygon Labs have teamed up to launch the Immutable zkEVM.
  • The two companies will collaborate to build a dedicated gaming blockchain powered by zero-knowledge proofs.
  • Co-founder Sandeep Nailwal said the new blockchain solution will change the structure of web3 gaming.

Immutable and Polygon Labs have collaborated to launch the Immutable zkEVM scaling solution, a new gaming blockchain powered by zero-knowledge proofs.

Polygon first announced the zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) in July last year. The announcement comes just a week before zkEVM moves to Mainnet beta.

Nailwal first teased the collaboration with Immutable an hour before the announcement telling the community to stay tuned because his company will be announcing “something which is going to change the structure of the Web3 gaming market.”

This is one of the biggest collaborations among Ethereum scaling protocols, with both platforms boasting massive gaming communities. Together, the two leading web3 gaming ecosystems received close to $2 billion in venture funding in 2022 according to a press release on Monday.

Describing zkEVM as the “holy grail of scaling” the technology massively increases transaction speeds whilst reducing fees while maintaining compatibility with ethereum to leverage the security benefits of the leading dApps network.

With this level of scalability, developers will be able to build a variety of applications, unlocking numerous use cases including multi-player online games.

Commenting on the alliance, Ryan Wyatt, President of Polygon Labs said: “Partnering with Immutable is a monumental step forward in our mission to empower developers and enable users to truly own their in-game assets. By leveraging Immutable’s top world-class gaming platform, game development becomes seamless, allowing for the creation of rich and unique gaming experiences.”

Polygon already boasts a gaming community of more than 220 million unique users participating in top gaming projects from the likes of Ubisoft, Atari, Animoca, Decentraland, Somnium Space, and The Sandbox.

On the other hand, Immutable allows developers to quickly launch web3 games with built-in mechanics with the likes of Gods Unchained, Guild of Guardians, Illuvium, Delysium, EmberSword and GameStop leveraging its web3 gaming tech stack. Immutable boasts more than 140 game titles on its platform.

Robbie Ferguson, Immutable President and Co-Founder commented: “By combining the #1 web3 gaming platform – currently serving hundreds of game studios and millions of players – with Polygon’s best-in-class zkEVM technology, we are building an Ethereum-centric gaming ecosystem that is poised to take Web3 mainstream and bring digital ownership to millions of people around the world.”

According to Ferguson, the new partnership creates a platform for players to claim ownership in expensive gaming assets like skins, which generate billions of dollars for game publishers.
