Quick take:

  • Line Next has teamed up with Sega to build a new game for the Game Dosi franchise.
  • Sega recently announced plans to take a different approach to Web3 gaming.
  • The company will allow third parties to use its less popular titles and characters for NFT gaming.

Line Next has announced a partnership with Sega to build a new web3 game for Game Dosi. The Seongham, South Korea-based web3 startup will leverage its NFT technology to bring one of Sega’s popular games to the blockchain.

This announcement came just days after Sega said it was withdrawing its most popular franchises and titles from the blockchain space.

The Japanese gaming and entertainment giant, however, insisted it is not completely pulling out of the space, with its less popular characters and game titles still available for third-party web3 startups to develop NFT games.

According to the memorandum of understanding signed between the two companies, Line Next will receive the license to utilize one of Sega’s “immensely popular” game IPs and develop it into a Web3 game, GamesBeat reported.

The new game will feature on the Game Dosi blockchain gaming platform, with Line Next supporting NFT production, digital payments, and marketing activities as part of its promo campaign to bring web3 gaming to the masses.

Commenting on the partnership, Youngsu Ko, CEO of Line Next said in a statement: “Line Next is pleased to be teaming up with Sega to bring some exciting gaming to the Web3 space for gamers around the world. Through this partnership, Game Dosi will provide Web3 content that anyone can easily enjoy, including Sega fans.”

Game Dosi is a blockchain gaming platform launched in May 2023. It has already unveiled six game titles including its in-house game “Project GD.” Its launch follows the announcement of Line Next’s digital collectibles marketplace Dosi Citizen, which launched in November 2022.

The platform is built with the goal of bridging the gap between traditional gaming and web3, under the slogan, “Gamer First, Web3 Next.” blockchain game developers have been criticised for prioritising monetisation over the quality of the games built. This has become one of the biggest drawbacks to the mass adoption of web3 gaming.
