Premier professional drone racing property, Drone Racing League (DRL) has partnered with Hivemind Capital Partners’ Playground Labs to launch the first-ever Play-to-Earn (P2E) cryptic sports game on Algorand blockchain.
The partnership will allow DRL to extend its gaming offering beyond eSports and IRL high-speed drone racing into the metaverse. Playground Labs is a P2E gaming affiliate of crypto investment fund, Hivemind.
Playground Labs’ inaugural sports racing game on Algorand paves the way for more to follow amid the increasing adoption of Web3 gaming in the metaverse.
Commenting on DRL’s launch on the Algorand platform, Playground Labs CEO Sam Peurifoy expressed his excitement of building “the Infrastructure of the Metaverse”, thus allowing gamers to earn real economic utility from doing what they love.
“The Drone Racing League is the most innovative, inclusive and high-tech sport, and DRL is made for the metaverse and the future global economy, where P2E games will create community, economic sustainability and authentic engagement for participants around the world,” Peurifoy added.
The partnership seeks to bring the gaming, cryptocurrency and drone industries into one platform, thereby capturing a combined market valued at about $2 trillion. The industry is driven by what is now known as “tech-setters”, a community of young, technology-obsessed audience that loves gaming, crypto, and immersive sports like DRL.
DRL President Rachel Jacobson said the sports game looks to bring its millions of fans to the metaverse, expressing her delight at being able to build the first P2E drone racing game on Algorand.
“We will accelerate DRL’s growth as the first omnichannel sports league, enabling our pilots and fans to race drones across the physical, the virtual, and the metaverse,” she said.
DRL has been rewarding its fans in several ways, including offering cash prizes to top racers in the true-to-life drone racing simulator on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and Epic Games. It now wants to extend its player experience offerings by joining the metaverse.
