Quick take:

  • Boost Mobile has launched a play-to-earn feature, allowing iPhone users to lower their phone bills.
  • Part of Dish Network’s prepaid wireless brand, the feature will enable users to earn by viewing ads when playing mobile games.
  • The service will be offered through the BoostOne App, with one Boostcoin equal to $0.01.

Boost Mobile has come up with a smart way to leverage blockchain technology after launching a play-to-earn (P2E) feature that will allow users of Dish Network’s prepaid wireless brand to earn “Boostcoins” by viewing ads when they play mobile games.

The new feature is part of Dish Network’s plan to make prepaid wireless service free. Users of the service will be able to lower their phone bills by watching advertisements as they play mobile games. Each Boostcoin is equivalent to $0.01.

Commenting on the company’s blockchain-powered feature, Stephen Stokols, executive vice president of retail wireless, DISH Network said: “This represents an exciting new business model and a stepping stone into the future for wireless consumers.”

“Most telcos rely on subscription models, but it’s time to move beyond the old ways and to embrace proven digital models popular in other industries,” Stokols added.

Currently, Spin and Win from the BoostOne App, which is equivalent to the Wheel of Fortune, is the only game equipped with the feature. The Wheel of Fortune game allows players to win between $0.05 to $5.00 in one spin.

Boost Mobile has not offered any clarification regarding limits to the number of games or ads a user can consume over a period of time.

The company is planning to add more earning opportunities in the future, including redeeming Boostcoins for free phones and third-party products. Boost Mobile also added that the coins may be exchangeable with others at some point in the future.

Dish Network has taken a unique approach to play-to-earn gaming by allowing users to earn blockchain-based Boostcoins from viewing ads rather than the playing activity itself. This concept seems to be easily adaptable to mainstream gaming companies that seem willing to embrace crypto payments as compared to the brick & mortar NFT P2E gaming.

Moreover, ads are paid for by advertisers, which means the game developers won’t have to sacrifice any income dedicated to game development for play-to-earn rewards.
