Quick take:

  • AC Milan versus Fiorentina became the first Serie A match to be broadcast live on the metaverse.

  • The game was broadcast in The Nemesis metaverse world, the first football match in any league to be shown on the platform.

Serie this Sunday made its debut in the metaverse with a match between AC Milan and Fiorentina. The game made history, becoming the first-ever football match to be transmitted live on The Nemesis metaverse platform. Metaverse users were able to immersively enjoy the experience inside the Lega Serie A room.

Commenting on the league’s huge leap to embrace Web3 experiences, AC Milan Chief Revenue Officer Casper Stylsvig said: “We are proud to have been protagonists of the first official league match broadcast in the metaverse, thanks to the pioneering initiative of the Serie A League and the partners involved.”

Stylsvig lauded his club for competing in the league’s first match to be streamed live in the metaverse saying that the move aligns well with the team’s plans to always be innovative.

“[We are] committed to an important modernisation and digitalisation process that has seen the club achieve important results, and has always been attentive to exploit the trends of the digital world to engage the more than 500 million AC Milan fans around the world,” he said.

Serie A’s move to embrace the metaverse follows an emerging shift in experiential entertainment with various competitions choosing to concurrently broadcast matches live in the metaverse as they do via mainstream networks.

Earlier this year, the Australian Open became the first-ever tennis competition to broadcast a Grand Slam in the metaverse while the National Basketball Association (NBA) has already streamed a number of matches in the immersive 3D space.

The metaverse has emerged as one of the trendiest topics over the last eight months. Companies across the world are assessing ways to play a part as they chase the highly adoptive customer base.

Even sports teams have moved in to try to come up with ways to engage more with their fans, which is why global leagues and competitions like Serie A, the NBA and the Australian Open have swooped in quickly.

With the industry projected to potentially be worth more than $13 trillion, there could be more matches and leagues coming to the metaverse.
