Sapien AI has announced a $5 million Series A round backed by Primitive Ventures, Animoca and Yield Guild Games. The company is building a blockchain infrastructure for training AI models.
Sapien’s platform allows users to tag text, images, and other data types with labels, enabling ML models to learn from the data. The company is building a network of human-powered AI training data creating what it calls an AI data marketplace for businesses.
Sapien said it will use the fresh capital to accelerate the innovation of its AI training models with gamified data labelling powered by blockchain technology. The company uses the decentralised ledger technology to reward data labellers (sapiens) for providing accurate annotations.
Commenting on the fundraising, Trevor Koverko, Co-Founder of Sapien said in a statement: “We are thrilled to have the support of our investors on our path to building the world’s largest network of ‘Sapiens’ – our brand for the millions of humans globally who power today’s most important AI models.”
The company’s platform has already attracted a diverse range of companies including healthcare, web3, education and leading LLMs.
James Ho, Head of Animoca Ventures believes Sapien’s unique approach to data labelling, which combines advanced technology with human expertise is a crucial differentiator.
“We believe the team’s deep understanding of the market and their commitment to customer success will make them an ideal partner for companies looking to train their AI models with the best data possible,” Ho said.
Sapien is the latest in a growing list of Web3 startups looking to bridge blockchain technology and artificial intelligence.
Last month, AI training firm FLock raised $6 million in a funding round led by Lightspeed, while Dragonfly was the lead investor in Web3 AI startup MyShell’s $11 million pre-Series A round. Raiinmaker, another AI training company raised $7.5 million in a funding round led by Jump Capital and Cypher Capital.
