The Open Metaverse Alliance (OMA3) has announced the Inter-World Portaling System (IWPS). The Switzerland-based organisation was formed in 2022 to spearhead the campaign for the construction of an interoperable metaverse.
The open metaverse is a metaverse infrastructure that leverages web3 items to promote user-owned and user-controlled metaverse. According to Monday’s announcement, the IWPS will enable players to portal across metaverses, allowing them to travel seamlessly across metaverse platforms like Alien Worlds, My Neighbor Alice, Sandbox, Space, Superworld, and Upland.
According to OMA3, by connecting disparate metaverse environments, the IWPS has the potential to be the next pivotal development in a lineage of transformative technologies, that include the railroad and highways, which connect physical spaces and the HTTP, which linked digital repositories.
“Railways, highways, and the Internet are built on widely accepted standards and a metaverse portal system needs to take the same approach. Building good standards is not an easy task. There are countless examples of standards that had interoperability issues initially (Bluetooth) or use cases with competing standards (the current electric vehicle charging infrastructure).
“Luckily there exists a body of knowledge and processes that consortiums can use to avoid such issues. OMA3 leverages these best practices,” a Google Doc accessible via GitHub reads.
The system provides a means of transportation within the 3D virtual world giving users wider access to different metaverse platforms. This according to OMA3 improves engagement in the digital world.
The development and standardisation of IWPS will usher in the next frontier of the metaverse, unlocking new potential for connectivity, commerce and shared experiences in 3D virtual spaces.
