Quick take:

  • StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation have launched the Devonomics Pilot Program.
  • The program wants to empower dApp builders and core developers on Starknet and stop the “blockchain brain drain”.
  • Devonomics launches with an initial distribution of 1,600 ETH, (~$3.5 million).

StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation have launched the Devonomics Pilot Program, dedicating 8% of network fees to Web3 builders and 2% to Starknet core developers. The program is created to empower both dApp builders and core developers on Starknet as part of an initiative to stop the “blockchain brain drain”.

StarkWare co-founder and CEO Uri Kolodny thinks the crypto winter has played a significant part in driving talent away from the blockchain industry. “Talented devs are leaving various [..] chains to do other things because they are financially squeezed.” According to Kolodny, several projects have been left hanging, which is a loss to everyone in the industry, adding that Devonomics is “an out-of-the-box answer to blockchain brain drain.”

The companies have set aside 10% network fees for the first distribution, amounting to 1,600 ETH (~$3.5 million). Although initially distributed in ETH, Starknet Foundation platforms begin distributing the fees in STRK tokens, which will allow core devs and dApp builders to participate in the governance of the ecosystem.

“Since day one, devs have brought Starknet to life and their work is generating the network’s fees,” said Kolodny. “Allocating a portion of the fees back to dApp builders – provisionally set at 8% – will enable them to do more to make the network even bigger and bolder.”

Devonomics is not the first program created to empower Web3 builders and core developers on the Starknet ecosystem. It joins other initiatives that are being planned or are already active including Adopter Grants, the Early Community Member Program, developer partnerships and grants to individual contributors.

Starknet Foundation CEO Diego Oliva commented: “This program is an innovative way to allocate tokens to those who are hands-on building Starknet dApps and infrastructure.”

According to Oliva, the program targets both established devs and new devs who are just starting to make an impact. “It’s an inclusive program that will propel the ecosystem’s expansion.”
