Quick take:

  • NHN corporation has partnered with Mysten Labs to build blockchain games on Sui.
  • The Korean technology company’s gaming division NGN Gaming expects to launch its first Web3 game in 2024.
  • NHN says its games boast 37 million users across mobile, desktop and web.

NHN Corporation, the largest developer of social casino games in the APAC region on Thursday announced it is pivoting to Web3 gaming. The Korean technology company has teamed up with layer 1 blockchain developer Mysten Labs to build blockchain games on Sui.

According to the announcement, NHN plans to launch its first web3 gaming projects in 2024, and there are plans to collaborate on more use cases for the Sui blockchain in web3 game development.

NHN Gaming boasts more than 37 million users across mobile, web and desktop platforms. The company generated an equivalent of $80 million from its gaming activities in the second quarter of 2023.

NHN wants to make the transition from web2 to web3 gaming smoother by building synergy between web3 and gaming. This statement relates to the perception that blockchain games focus more on offering gaming incentives rather than building fun quality games.

“Up to this point, there has been a lack of synergy between web3 and gaming,” said Ujin Chung, CEO of NHN Corporation. “That synergy will be driven by growth and sustainability, the kind of which is best served by the minds who honed this skill in web2, and have a proven track record of success in creating experiences that users enjoy. Through our partner selection process, Mysten Labs stood out to NHN for both their expertise as well as the innovative capabilities of Sui.”

Sui Network stood out for NHN as the preferred choice for its web3 gaming projects because it offers low fees, fast transactions, and high scalability. The platform allows developers to build decentralised games, allowing players to own in-game assets.

Evan Cheng, CEO and co-founder of Mysten Labs thinks NHN has the ability to onboard players in large numbers, in what he calls “stickiness for users”.

“It’s a code web3, as a whole, has not managed to crack, with daily active users on the most popular chains barely topping 300K. At Mysten Labs, our mission is to bring the benefits of web3 to the masses, by the billions. Creating products that actually attract user volume is our utmost priority,” Cheng said.
