  • The trademarks also cover virtual apparel, virtual concerts and virtual environments for restaurants and bars.
  • Avatars and skins for use in the metaverse are also covered by the trademarks.

The owners of the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Aria, and MGM resorts and casinos have filed Web3 trademark applications, indicating plans for NFTs and the metaverse, a tweet by trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis revealed.

The trademarks were filed on Jul 29 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office by Mirage Resorts, LLC.; CityCenter Land, LLC.; Mandalay Bay, LLC.;  and MGM Resorts International Corp.

All four hospitality entities have filed the same trademark applications that cover the same goods and services.

The class 9 trademark covers downloadable virtual goods, namely computer programs featuring casino chips, gaming tables, and slot machines; downloadable virtual goods, including clothing, footwear, headwear, eyewear, bags, backpacks, sports bags, key chains, magnets, and drinking ware. The trademark also covers non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for digital graphics, digital collectibles, digital photography, and digital video clips.

Downloadable software for providing access to an online virtual environment along with the creation, production and modification of digital animated and non-animated designs and characters, avatars, digital overlays and skins for access and use in virtual environments are also covered by the class 9 trademark.

There is also a class 42 trademark that covers the same goods and services as class 9, but for non-downloadable items.

The class 35 trademark covers retail store services rendered in a virtual environment featuring virtual goods, namely, casino chips, gaming tables, and slot machines; retail store services rendered in a virtual environment featuring virtual goods.

The class 41 trademark is for providing virtual environments in which users can visit resort hotels, casinos, nightclubs, bars, restaurants and spas; entertainment services, namely, providing virtual concerts and shows in connection with a virtual resort hotel or casino as well as virtual environments in which users can interact for recreational, leisure or entertainment purposes.

The goods and services covered indicate plans for the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Aria, and MGM resorts and casinos to expand their presence into Web3, with casinos, hotels, bars and restaurants in the metaverse.

“Clearly, the owners of the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Aria, and MGM resorts and casinos see the potential of the Metaverse and are preparing their trademarks and brands for the virtual economy that will dominate it,” Kondoudis opined. “It is a safe bet that these resorts and casinos expect to be major players in that virtual gaming economy.”

Hotels that have released NFTs and launched in the metaverse recently include Millenium Hotels and Resorts, which launched in Decentraland, as well as the NoMo SoHo Hotel, which offered reservations via NFTs in May.
