Quick take:

  • The NFT hoodie will go live this Thursday for private mint.
  • Holders of Clone X and RTFKT x Nike Dunks Genesis CryptoKicks can have initial access to a limited hoodie.
  • Owners of the hoodie can add AR effects through trackers and QR codes.

Originally revealed in April, RTFKT and Nike’s AR Genesis hoodie is set to launch as a non-fungible token this Thursday, Jul 21. It is the first “phygital” wearable garment the two entities have collaborated on.

The hoodie will be a digital wearable for Clone X avatars in the metaverse and forgeable into a physical garment that can be worn in real life. The hoodie comes with an NFC (near field communication) chip that enables wireless communication between the physical garment and the digital asset.

The private mint of the hoodie will go live this Thursday and holders of Clone X and RTFKT x Nike Dunks Genesis CryptoKicks can have initial access to a limited hoodie. The hoodie comes with various utilities for holders, including the ability to add AR effects such as virtual wings through trackers and QR codes.

Proving that they’re more than just an NFT streetwear studio that feeds on hype, RTFKT plans to continue adding utilities for NFT holders over time, including token-gated access to in-person events.

Earlier this month, RTFKT airdropped limited-edition Takashi Murakami NFT to attendees of Takashi Murakami’s – the artist behind CloneX – “An Arrow through History” two-part exhibition at Gagosian’s NYC gallery.

According to Vogue Business, RTFKT released all the 3D files and commercial rights to to its CloneX avatars through a token-gated site earlier this month. This means that CloneX holders can use CloneX imagery for advertising and business purposes ranging from media to physical merch. Since its launch in November, CloneX has generated a total trading volume of $650 million, according to the RTFKT.

After being acquired by Nike last December, both entities have launched a series of collaborations, starting with the RTFKT x Nike Dunks Genesis CryptoKicks NFT project. Similar to the AR hoodie, CryptoKicks were forgeable into physical shoes.

This was followed by the mysterious ‘MNLTH’, RTFKT and Nike’s first-ever co-branded project for which fans went on virtual collective “quests” to unlock the black box. The resale value of a MNLTH reached 9 ETH before its contents were revealed.

RTFKT co-founder Benoit Pagotto told Vogue Business that Nike’s acquisition of the company “was needed Web3 to accelerate.”

“It sent a message to take this seriously, and we know for a fact that a lot of big brands started to pick up the phone the day it was announced,” added Pagotto.

“It puts us in a powerful position to help dictate the future of Web3,” RTFKT co-founder Steven Vasilev told Vogue Business. “A big part of the deal was staying independent and guiding Nike on Web3.”

In 2019, Nike filed a patent for Cryptokicks, way before the countless brands and companies started filing Web3 trademark applications this year.
