Quick take:

  • Fans can unlock digital and physical looks via their Clone X DNA trait.
  • Each Clone holder can mint up to two of each item from DNA collections plus Murakami Drip.
  • Ten pairs of RTFKT x Nike Air Force 1 sneakers will remain digital wearables for the time being.

RTFKT announced on Monday the season 1 forging of the Clone X phygital fashion collection, which fans can access based on the traits of their specific Clone X NFT avatars. Along with the announcement, RTFKT has also unveiled a 60-piece fashion collection of digital wearables that NFT holders can forge physical merch from.

Created in collaboration with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, the Clone X NFT collection consists of 20,000 3D avatars divided into eight DNA types with varying levels of rarity based on their traits.

RTFKT has released 10 collections of digital wearables based on Clone X DNAs including the Human, Reptile, Robot, Alien, Murakami Drip and more. The collections include caps, t-shirts, hoodies, jackets and sneakers, which can be unlocked via the holder’s NFT DNA trait.

With the exception of socks and caps, all wearables are forgeable into physical items that will be equipped with NFC tags that holders can link to their NFT, giving holders the opportunity to access future drops and physical events, as well as unlock experiences and customise their avatars in future.

Depending on the number of avatars they own and the DNA traits the avatars possess, each Clone holder can mint up to two of each item from the DNA collections plus Murakami Drip, For instance, those who own a Human Clone X with Murakami Drip can mint up to 31 total items, including two sneakers, two caps, two jackets and so forth.

There is also a limited-edited Genesis collection made for all Clones, limited to one mint per item. All Clones can mint and forge the Genesis t-shirt for free.

RTFKT is also dropping 10 pairs of RTFKT x Nike Air Force 1 digital sneakers inspired by Clone X DNA traits. The sneakers are not part of this season 1 forging event and will remain digital wearables for the time being, which means that holders can expect them to be forgeable into physical sneakers in future.

Murakami Drip avatar trait holders will have access to the first-ever RTFKT x Murakami x Nike Air Force 1 digital sneakers that are part of the Murakami Drip collection.

Minting for the wearables go live on Wednesday at 11am CET, 9am GMT, 5am ET, 2am PT. The mint window will be open until Sep 7 and physical item forging will be open from Sep 7-14.

Prices for the limited-run Air Force 1 sneakers range from $30 to $600, leaving some users disgruntled. Twitter user “Lupoderoma98” said: “These prices have to be a joke we are in the middle of a bear market and u guys are charging us .38 [ETH] for a shoe?? Come on we are loyal holders and you are only taking us money out of the pocket. the only free merch is a t shirt that looks like merch from spiderman.”

Another Twitter user “innotjought” agreed, saying: “I couldn’t agree more, most people are down double digits on their clonex buys to boot, while they made a ton on commissions also, but they keep coming back for more cash, from their holders. Charging top end full luxury retail pricing.”

Whether it’s a cash grab or not, it’s evident that there are many other willing buyers as Nike raked in a whopping $185 million in revenue from NFT sales since acquiring RTFKT last year to expand its Web3 strategy. The sportswear titan tops the list of brands that have generated the most sales from NFTs.
