Reddit is testing a new NFT profile picture (pfp) feature that would allow users to set any NFT as their avatar and verify its ownership. This comes shortly after Twitter rolled out its new NFT pfp feature just a few days ago with verified NFT pfps appearing in a hexagonal shape.

Speaking to TechCrunch, Reddit said that the testing of this pfp feature is still in its early stages and no decisions have been made on it yet. The feature is in its internal testing phase and is not publicly available to Reddit users.

“We’re always exploring ways to provide value for users and communities on Reddit. At the moment we’re testing the ability to use NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verify ownership,” a Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt told TechCrunch. “It’s a small, internal test and no decisions have been made about expanding or rolling out the capability.”

Reddit’s new pfp feature was spotted by Nima Owji, a 15-year-old developer who digs into popular apps and tweets about their upcoming features. He came across a banner on Reddit’s web app that appeared at the top of subreddits but wasn’t shown to users.

The banner’s header reads, “Your NFT, now your avatar!” followed by “You can now use digital collectibles as your Reddit avatar.” Owji said that the ‘Get Started’ button on the banner wasn’t working at the time.

Further digging by Owji in Reddit’s code uncovered a test collection of NFTs on OpenSea, consisting of different variants of the Reddit alien mascot named Snoo. The collection is on Ethereum’s testnet, Rinkeby, and is not published to the main network for sale.

In June last year, Reddit made its first move into NFT with the launch of its first NFT collection, CryptoSnoos, the site’s own digital collectibles. Buyers can use a CryptoSnoo NFT card as their avatar on the site and their comments will feature the CryptoSnoo avatar with a glow animation.

Only four CryptoSnoos have been released so far, each a limited 1/1 NFT. The one that fetched the highest price was sold for 175 ETH. However, Reddit has no plans to launch more CryptoSnoos as they were also just a test of the site’s NFT initiatives.

As for the pfp feature that’s still in testing, Reddit has yet to reveal details on supported blockchains.
