Rakuten Expands into Web 3 with Launch of New NFT Marketplace

Japanese e-commerce and online retailing company Rakuten Group, Inc. has just launched its NFT marketplace today. Called Rakuten NFT, the marketplace features listings of NFTs ranging from sports and entertainment to music and anime from Japan.

The NFT marketplace also features a one-stop platform that enables NFT holders to build their own webpage to issue and sell NFTs. Any NFTs purchased can be added to a collection or on the buyer’s own webpage to be put up for sale.

NFT buyers can use Rakuten ID when making purchases, allowing them to earn and spend Rakuten points. A service for peer-to-peer selling and issuing of NFTs is planned for 2023 or later, which will support creators in Japan and worldwide in issuing NFTs. There are also plans to introduce a diversity of additional payment methods.

An Ultraman anime NFT and an NFT of the horse racing-themed comic Kurogane Hiroshi G1 Gekitoshi (2010 Series), containing illustrations by famed manga artist Hiroshi Kurogane will go to market at 9pm JST.

Other NFTs to be launched on the marketplace include rare footage including famous scenes from TV Asahi Corporation shows and NFT trading cards* of rock idol group Under Beasty. 

NFT artwork by contemporary artists from the Art Powers Japan Association and NFTs featuring characters from Tiger & Bunny 2, the popular anime from Bandai Namco Pictures Inc. are also in the pipeline.

In addition, cultural NFTs from Japanese clothing brand Beams Co., Ltd., music-related NFTs from Up-Front Group Co., Ltd., as well as NFTs using visuals from Estab Life, the original anime project from Goro Taniguchi which is partially funded by Rakuten, will be launched on the marketplace later.

Rakuten is also planning to produce and sell the J.League NFT Collection Players Anthem, the J.League official NFT collection. The company will be developing the Rakuten NFT Art Gallery, a collection of original NFT artwork selected by Rakuten NFT.

To mark its opening, the Rakuten NFT Art Gallery will display a selection of digital artwork including works by Japanese image creator, Orihara. Sales on the art gallery are expected to begin in May this year or later.
