Quick take:

  • The integration of these blockchains allows users to benefit from lower gas fees and faster transactions.
  • Users can now access Polygon on the Crypto Browser Project on Android and PC, as well as Opera for Android.
  • The rest of the blockchains will be available in the Crypto Browser Project in the coming months.

Opera announced today that it has integrated support for eight blockchain ecosystems: Solana, Polygon, StarkEx, Ronin, Celo, Nervos, IXO and Bitcoin. This move comes as part of Opera’s Web3 push as it furthers its mission of remaining chain agnostic.

The beta version of Crypto Browser Project was released in January and comes with a native non-custodial crypto wallet and other crypto-related features. The integration of multiple blockchains and notably Layer-2s is a key strategy for Opera in onboarding millions of users to the Crypto Browser Project “in an environmentally conscious way.”

With today’s integration of these blockchains, users can access PoS blockchains and Ethereum Layer-2 ecosystems such Polygon and StarkEx and benefit from lower gas fees and faster transactions while minimising carbon footprint.

“Ever since we started in the Web3 space in 2018, we’ve been sealing partnerships with the most popular and cutting edge blockchains and web3 domain name providers in order to accelerate crypto’s evolution from proof of concept towards mass adoption. Ultimately, Web3 is on its way to becoming a mainstream web technology and users won’t need to know they’re interacting with it. They need to get a superior user experience and a true benefit,” said Jorgen Arnesen, EVP Mobile at Opera.

From today, users can access games, dApps, and NFT marketplaces on the Polygon or Solana ecosystems as well as Layer 2 DeFi via StarkWare-powered DiversiFi. While Opera is working with the Solana ecosystem to integrate the Opera Wallet, users will have to connect through the Phantom wallet for now.

Additionally, Opera has also announced support for the Ronin blockchain. With Ronin recently falling victim to a $625 million crypto heist, Opera’s crypto ecosystem lead, Susie Batt, told CoinDesk that “privacy and security of our users are our highest priority” and that “users should understand the risk of an ecosystem still in its infancy.”

Users can now access Polygon on the Crypto Browser Project on Android and PC, as well as Opera for Android. Solana, StarkWare/Deversifi Layer 2, IXO, Ronin, Nervos, Bitcoin and Celo are now available in Opera for Android and will be available in the Crypto Browser Project in the coming months.
