Quick Take:

  • OpenSea NFT trading volume is rising amid an increase in activity driven by BAYC NFTs.
  • Celebrities have been snapping up Bored Ape NFTs, with Eminem, Dave Chappelle and Britney Spears, all reportedly joining the BAYC.
  • The world’s largest NFT marketplace could break the record for monthly NFT sales this January.

NFT trading volume on OpenSea is rising as more celebrities move to pay six-figure dollar amounts for Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs.  As a result, OpenSea is on course to report record monthly NFTs sales in January.

Some of the notable celebrities snapping up Bored Apes include rapper Eminem, musical artist Britney Spears, and stand-up comedian Dave Chappelle.

The Multi-Grammy Award winner, Eminem bought BAYC’s ape outfitted in a military-style cap and hip hop clothing for 123.55 ETH, an equivalent of $470,000 when we reported. Another report also indicates Chappelle had purchased the Bored Ape #8343 for 99 ETH, approximately $378,346.32 as of this writing.

Breaking the news on Twitter, @Halloimmorgan wrote, “wallet created today, and ENS held the domain davidchappelle.eth for him and allowed him to mint it 2 hours ago.”

OpenSea’s current all-time high trading volume stands at $3.42 billion, reported in August, and during which the daily volume peaked at $322 million. However, with the month-to-date volume now flirting with $800 million, the world’s largest NFT marketplace seems on course for another record.

In December, the platform recorded a trading volume of $3.24 billion, coming close to its August highs. But even though Monday’s reported volume of about $255.85 million, significantly lags the daily high set last year, the influx of celebrity activity driven by Yuga Labs’ BAYC and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) collections could push this month’s activity well above $3.42 billion.

Data from Crypto Slam indicates that the MAYC collections dominated NFT trading volume in the last 7 days with 94.05 million, with its close cousin BAYC following closely in second with $89.33 million.

The two projects now have a cumulative 30-day trading volume of about $191.5 million and $183 million, respectively. Axie Infinity and CloneX continue to dominate in first and second, respectively, with about $250 million and $200.6 million.
