Mariah Carey has ventured into the world of NFTs with her first-ever non-fungible token. The NFT is designed like a boarding pass and will grant the winning bidder an opportunity to meet Carey and fly with her to New York for her induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
The holder of the NFT will also get the opportunity to sit with Carey at her table during the ceremony. The NFT itself is described as “a spinning boarding pass in Carey’s signature ‘pink yet lavender’ colourway and accented with glitter” and comes accompanied by a custom audio recording.
Carey has previously been associated with NFTs and crypto after investing in the NFT platform Geojam, which will host the auction of her NFT from June 3 to June 9. The bidding is permitted only in Geojam’s ecosystem token $JAM and will start from $5,000.
The recording artist’s Hall of Fame experience is scheduled to take place on June 15 and 16.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale will be sent to The Fresh Air Fund, which Carey has supported for several years during her music career.
The “Songbird Supreme” said that the Hall of Fame experience and the opportunity to give to charity inspired her the most in making her first NFT.
She also cited the Covid period as the one that triggered her interest in the digital art world during which she quietly explored the community of artists in the space.
“Of course, everyone was talking about NFTs and the new dynamic between art and commerce. That’s something that I’m still learning about and do not profess to be an expert in,” the “Queen of Christmas” told Rolling Stone.
“This particular NFT experience is based around the once-in-a-lifetime moment of being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and sharing my joy with one of my amazing fans while also raising money for two phenomenal charities that are very close to my heart,” the singer added.
Commenting on Carey’s first NFT, Geojam co-founder and CEO Sarah Figueroa highlighted the power of NFTs in the music industry saying that they can do more than just present art on the blockchain.
“[NFTs… have the power to store exclusive access, and this experience is showing just that,” she said, adding, “We couldn’t be more thrilled to amplify this monumental celebration with Mariah, as she gets inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame and give the fan the opportunity of a lifetime for charity.”
