Madonna revealed in an Instagram post on Thursday night that she has acquired a Bored Ape NFT. In the post showing off her Bored Ape #4988, she said she had finally “entered the metaverse” and asked her followers what she should name her Bored Ape.
The popstar thanked crypto payment provider MoonPay, which has been helping celebrities purchase blue-chip NFTs. Its concierge service has been providing high net-worth individuals with a hassle-free way to purchase digital assets since last year.
According to transaction records of Bored Ape #4988 on OpenSea, MoonPay purchased the NFT for 180 ETH 10 days ago. The NFT was then transferred to another wallet two days ago.
MoonPay also purchased Bored Ape #1506 two days ago. The NFT was transferred to another wallet a day ago, and is now the Twitter profile picture of rapper Wiz Khalifa.
Celebrities have been snapping up Bored Ape NFTs in recent months. Rapper Eminem made a 123.45 ETH purchase in January. Football star Neymar and Tennis star Serena Williams also showed off their Bored Ape NFTs in the same month.
Earlier this week, Universal Music Group (UMG) announced that it has acquired Bored Ape #5537 to manage a virtual band made up entirely of Bored Ape and Mutant Ape characters. The band, Kingship, was created by Wb3 label 10.22PM, owned by UMG.
The new celebrity purchases come after Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) launched its governance token, ApeCoin.
Shortly after ApeCoin started trading, Yuga Labs, the company that created the BAYC collection, announced its NFT metaverse campaign after completing a $450 million funding round led by Web3 investment venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz’s a16z. The fresh funding now values Yuga Labs at $4 billion.
