HashKey Group has appointed former Huobi Global CEO Livio Weng as Group’s Chief Operating Officer (COO). The Hong Kong-based digital assets investment company has been on a hiring binge for top executives as it looks to play a key role in the growth of the Web3 ecosystem in the country.

Commenting on his new position, Livio said: “We are at the tipping point of the virtual asset market where licensed and regulated exchanges will become an industry mainstream. HashKey Group is one of the world’s earliest blockchain evangelists, and over the years we have grown into one of Asia’s leading digital assets financial services companies. I will work closely with the team to focus on the sustainable growth of the Group and lead HashKey to become a reputable and fully compliant global virtual asset ecosystem.”

The appointment comes on the heels of HashKey’s $500 million close of its third fund in January. The new fund targets blockchain and crypto opportunities globally.

HashKey’s previous Web3 activity focused on blockchain infrastructure and data protocols, including investments in blockchain infrastructure and decentralised storage platform Nillion’s $20 million fundraising.

In October 2022, HashKey also invested in the Hong Kong-based web3 payments infrastructure platform Reap’s $40 million round. It also has Chainsafe, another web3 infrastructure firm and the web3 data platform Space and Time in its portfolio.

HashKey Group also boasts being one of the only two firms in Hong Kong licensed by the Securities and Futures Commission (“SFC”) to operate a virtual asset trading platform.

Livio brings a wealth of financial experience to the team including a stint at the Chinese peer-to-peer lending platform Jiedaibao. He also has experience in the tech industry, having worked in Chinese internet giant SoHu and co-founded a student social networking app SXBBM.com.
