The Sandbox today announced an official partnership with film and television studio, Lionsgate and its partner Millennium Media, to develop a dedicated entertainment destination named Action City.

Action City will be a dedicated “LAND” featuring voxelized characters inspired by fan-favourite Lionsgate and Millennium Media film franchises. This partnership makes Lionsgate the first major entertainment company to enter The Sandbox.

For the future, Lionsgate and The Sandbox are planning to create experiences that dive into the studio’s rich horror catalogue. Liongate’s Land will host film-themed experiences with which players can interact, while Action City will launch with film franchises including Rambo, The Expendables and Hellboy.

“We can’t wait to open our Lionsgate land in The Sandbox metaverse so fans around the globe can create, play, and explore our film IP in ways that go beyond what’s possible in the physical world,” said Jenefer Brown, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Live, Interactive, and Location Based Entertainment at Lionsgate. “We’re excited by the new possibilities our strategic relationship with The Sandbox will offer our community.”

All of Lionsgate and Millennium’s content in Action City will allow users to create their own experiences through both original and well-known characters and worlds. The voxelized characters will not just be visual props, they will also offer players utility as they can be used as avatars or in original experiences created by players.

“Our vision for The Sandbox has always been to bring to life thousands of colorful worlds where players can create their own original adventures alongside licensed content from their favorite movies, TV shows, anime, and more,” said Sebastien Borget, COO and Co-Founder of The Sandbox.

Throughout its history, Lionsgate has been nominated for 129 Academy Awards and possesses a rich catalog of popular action and horror films.

The Sandbox has become a popular platform for entertainment companies that want to enter the metaverse. Warner Music Group entered a partnership with The Sandbox in January to create a music-themed world in the metaverse featuring performances from the company’s roster of artists.

In March, The platform teamed up with Korean entertainment company, Cube Entertainment, to bring K-culture to the metaverse. Last month, the animated film series, The Smurfs, announced that it is launching The Smurfs Village in The Sandbox this summer.
