Quick take:

  • Immutable has unveiled its web3 onboarding solution for gamers and developers.
  • Immutable Passport is a multi-platform wallet and authentication solution that makes it easier for new users to gain access to web3 marketplaces and games.
  • The tool allows the onboarding of gamers through passwordless sign-on and automated wallet creation.

Immutable has launched its multiplatform web3 onboarding solution. Immutable Passport is a non-custodial wallet and authentication tool that allows users to gain access to blockchain games and marketplaces through passwordless sign-on.

The non-custodial solution does not keep hold of the user’s private keys, thus making it easily adaptable across mainstream audiences. Immutable Passport offers players a secure digital wallet, protection against fraud, and seamless authentication across web3 games and marketplaces.

The tool also allows players to create their own web3 identities, which they can use across multiple platforms. According to Immutable, Passport is specifically created to address the web3 gaming space, which seems to have been ignored by the majority of the current wallet solutions.

In an exclusive comment to NFTgators, Michael Powell, product marketing lead at Immutable highlighted the current solution’s requirements for consent for every interaction as a major obstacle to onboarding mainstream gamers to web3.

“ [it impacts a game’s immersiveness, resulting in web3 games having to move all blockchain-enabled features outside core gameplay,”  said Powell.

“Passport enables users to easily access funds and make transactions without leaving the game, all while protecting them through smart heuristics, 2FA approvals, and user-controlled spend limits,” Powell added, highlighting the issues that Passport could fix with its passwordless sign-on.

Moreover, Passport offers gamers a vertically integrated gaming experience across Immutable’s suite of products, enabling them to “mint millions of NFTs for free, get their assets listed across the top NFT marketplaces,” whilst also enabling them to “promote their game to immutable’s community.”

Passport also allows players to use one identity and travel with their assets across their gaming experience.

Immutable Passport will also be accessible across multiple platforms. The company is prioritising mobile and desktop initially, while console support is planned for the future, Powell said.

This aligns with Immutable President and Co-Founder Robbie Ferguson’s sentiment, who said in a press release on Tuesday that “For web3 gaming to reach a billion players, onboarding must be invisible, secure, and work across any game – mobile, console or desktop. Until now, security and friction have been tradeoffs.”

Passport allows users to sign on using an email and a one-time password (OTP). “More than that, just like a Gamertag or a Steam account, Immutable Passport offers unified identity, transaction, and authentication functionalities that simply haven’t existed in the web3 gaming space until now. We can’t wait to introduce our partners to the power of Immutable Passport,” added Ferguson.
