Global digital agency Dept has announced the launch of its dedicated Metaverse Practice today to help brands interact with consumers in the virtual world. The Metaverse Practice includes a team of about 100 crypto and blockchain developers, games builders, 3D artists and creators, augmented and virtual reality experts, and software engineers.

Currently, Dept is working with several global brands ranging from fashion, entertainment and commerce. The agency will be launching a number of new Web3 projects in the coming weeks ranging from immersive metaverse experiences to NFT marketplaces.

The Metaverse Practice team has spent the past year working on Web3 and metaverse experiences for the agency’s clients.

In May last year, the agency created the Eurovision Village 2021 which enabled viewers from around the world to experience the Eurovision Song Contest Rotterdam in a 3D virtual world.

Dept teamed up with metaverse company Journee to launch the first-ever Meta Festival in September which attracted over 4000 visitors to the festival’s virtual Metapolis world.

In November, the agency launched Algomart, the first open-source white-label solution for launching NFT marketplaces, built on the Algorand blockchain. Motorsports Games has used Algomart to launch its 24-hour NFT marketplace while Drone Racing League was the first sports league to run an NFT marketplace through Algorand.

Dept joins a growing trend of creative agencies launching their own metaverse practices, foundries and virtual offices in the last month. These include Havas Group, Hogarth, and Vice Media’s creative agency, Virtue Futures.

Jesse Streb, Global SVP, Technology & Engineering at Dept told NFTgators in an email that the trend is due to the sudden acceleration of the digital world induced by the pandemic, causing a big shift in the mindsets of many brands, who now see the metaverse, NFTs and other Web3 experiences as the next technology revolution to create, discover, identify, socialise and collaborate.

“It’s a lot like how the iPhone changed society. The metaverse is the next iteration of the internet and will revolutionize how humans interact and live their lives. Brands need their agency partners to help them experiment in these new virtual worlds,” he added.

Streb reveals that Dept is exploring how it can transact more with cryptocurrencies and establish a presence on platforms like Decentraland.

Alongside the launch of its Metaverse Practice, Dept has also announced that it will launch the world’s first 24-hour metaverse event in June this year. The hybrid event will take place in a virtual location called Metapolis, with in-person viewing parties in Singapore, New York, Berlin and London.

The event will offer talks focused on Web3, NFTs, blockchain technology, DAO’s, commerce, tech, AI, marketing, growth, sustainability, diversity, trustless systems and security, along with industry-focused talks about the future of fashion, gaming, sports and social media.

Dept expects 40 speakers delivering 60+ talks across three different stages. There will also be a virtual playground for music, workshops and other entertainment. Tickets for the virtual portion of the event, taking place in Metapolis, are free.
