Quick take:
- Will Wright is building his first blockchain game.
- The gaming industry veteran has announced VoxVerse, a web3 game focusing on onboarding free-to-play gamers.
- Despite not being a big fan of NFTs Wright believes using in-game tokens and non-fungible tokens to attract whales is important.
Will Wright is creating his first blockchain game VoxVerse, announced in August. The gaming industry veteran is building a metaverse-based game that focuses on onboarding free-to-play gamers.
In an interview with Axios, Wright admitted that despite his low tolerance for non-fungible tokens, in-game crypto and NFTs still play an important role in attracting investors to the burgeoning blockchain gaming space.
“I’m much more interested in attracting a million free-to-play players than, you know, 10,000 rich whales, although we could use those rich whales,” Write told Axios. Whales are people who invest heavily in the crypto space, and in Wright’s case, NFTs and in-game tokens.
This is not the first time Wright is announcing his entry into web3.
In August, Wright announced his new gaming company Gallium Studios, which he co-founded with Lauren Elliott, the creator of the “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego” video game series.
Wright wants to create a game that attracts different facets of stakeholders. Explaining his target groups of people, Wright said he wants to onboard:
- A small number of rich virtual landowners, paying for plots with crypto.
- A middle group of creative players who’ll be tapped by the landowners to make stuff (and share any sale proceeds from what they make).
- A mass of free-to-play folks who’ll hang out and play in the world.
Although Wright’s description does not specifically state collaborations with blockchain gaming guilds, the VoxVerse game economy sounds very similar to Axie Infinity, whose tokenomics is driven by the likes of Yield Guild Games, and several other communities.
Blockchain games leverage gaming communities to accelerate adoption.
VoxVerse is backed by one of the leading metaverse gaming projects Gala Games, which has invested more than $25 million in the project.
Although VoxVerse utilises NFT characters for its gameplay, Wright emphasised that he does not want to be involved in the business of selling NFTs. His co-founder Elliott said that although VoxVerse does rely on NFT characters, Wright’s focus remains on game design, Axios reported.
