Gagosian to Showcase Never-Before-Seen Works of Contemporary Artist Takashi Murakami

New York-based art gallery has announced it will exhibit Takashi Murakami’s never-before-seen works in two of its galleries this May. Takashi Murakami is a Japanese contemporary artist known for his floral designs that have been widely adopted across several industries including fashion and art.

Gagosian broke the news via an Instagram post writing, “we’re thrilled that, in May 2022, Takashi Murakami (@takashipom) will have an exhibition at two of Gagosian’s New York galleries—980 and 976 Madison Avenue.”

The exhibition is expected to feature some of Murakami’s best works including his popular Cone X NFT project developed in collaboration with RTFKT. Clone X is a collection of 20,000 NFT avatars available on the world’s largest NFT marketplace OpenSea.

The exhibition will also showcase Murakami’s distinctive flowery paintings and sculptures, as well as, a “series of tondos that feature a fish motif that was originally painted onto a Chinese Yuan Dynasty vase.”

The presentation will be the first showcasing of Murakami’s works at the Gagosian since 2007.

The Japanese creative genius is one of the most recognised visual artists in the world. His artworks have fetched millions of dollars in auctions houses, with the most expensive piece, selling for $13.5 million in 2008 at Sotheby’s New York auction.

He is also the theorist behind the contemporary art movement he calls “Superflat”, which is an aesthetic combining contemporary Japanese pop culture with classical Japanese art.

Referred to as the “Warhol of Japan” Murakami has continued to appeal to both the commercial side of the art industry and the fan club. Some of the ardent fans of his works include popular celebrities like Pharell Williams, Kanye West and Billie Eilish.

He is also one of the artists to embrace modern technologies like social media and non-fungible tokens to further promote his brand.
