Quick take:

  • Other senior management executives were formerly from Square, Creative Artists Agency, and Cisco Investments.
  • The executives join MoonPay’s team of about 300 employees.
  • MoonPay plans to double its headcount over the next six months.

MoonPay has filled two of its C-suite roles with the appointment of Jim Esposito as COO this month and Akash Garg as CTO in June, along with hiring a number of senior management executives.

Jim Esposito was the former president & CEO of mobile payment service, Cash App, and  Vice President of Payments, Risk and Treasury Operations at Etsy.

Akash Garg was the VP of Engineering at Block, a software development company that developed Cash App. He was previously Director of Engineering at Uber and Sr. Director of Engineering, Growth and International Team at Twitter.

Besides Esposito and Garg, MoonPay has also hired Garrett McManus as VP of Marketing and Partnerships; Tom Capone as head of MoonPay Studios; and Abhay Mavalankar as VP of Corporate Development & Investments.

Like Garg, McManus was also an employee at Block (previously known as Square), where he was the Cash App Artist Development Lead for 11 years. Prior to that, he was in the sports industry, having worked with San Jose Sharks and San Francisco Giants for a total of six years.

Tom Capone previously worked at entertainment and sports agency, Creative Artists Agency, for five years. Capone started at the agency as a mail room clerk and worked his way up to becoming an agent. He left the agency in 2022.

Abhay Mavalankar is an experienced investment banker, board observer and investor in various TradFi and tech companies, before his most recent role handling Venture Investments and mergers & acquisitions at Cisco Investment, the corporate development and venture capital arm of Cisco. He held the role for two years and joined MoonPay as VP of Corporate Development & Investments this month.

Apart from these new hires, MoonPay is also bringing Asiff Hirji on board as a senior advisor to the CEO. From 2017 to 2019, he was President and COO at Coinbase, before moving on to TradFi companies and back to Web3 with his most recent role as President at blockchain financial services firm, Figure.

These executives join MoonPay’s team of about 300 employees. While other crypto giants have been laying off staff to prepare for crypto winter, MoonPay is taking the opposite approach as the company is planning to double its headcount over the next six months.

Last month, MoonPay began building out its concierge team for its concierge service that helps celebrities and high-net-worth individuals purchase NFTs.
