In the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs)— blockchain-based digital files providing proof of ownership of a digital collectible, artwork, or a video clip, headlines matter and Cristiano Ronaldo appears to know this well.
The world’s all-time leading goal scorer (officially) has launched his first NFT collection with Binance. The Manchester United player announced the multi-year partnership deal in June this year, making his first major foray into crypto.
The collection will debut on the Binance NFT marketplace on Friday, November 18, 2022. This launch seems timed to perfection as it happens a day after the entire Cristiano Ronaldo interview about how Manchester United betrayed him is published on Piers Morgan’s YouTube channel.
Morgan and Ronaldo have been releasing teasers of the 90-min interview ahead of the two-part publication with the first part coming out on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Morgan said on his channel that although some people seem to be criticising Ronaldo after seeing little clips of the interview, a lot will sympathise with him once they watch the whole exposé.
Can sympathy convince more Ronaldo fans into buying his NFTs? Well, one reason why fans buy collectibles of their favourite celebrities is that they are usually searching for a deeper connection.
Ronaldo stated that part of the reason for creating the collection was to recognise that his fans are a big part of his success.
“It was important to me that we created something memorable and unique for my fans as they are such a big part of my success,” said Ronaldo. “With Binance, I was able to make something that not only captures the passion of the game but rewards fans for all the years of support.”
The inaugural Cristiano Ronaldo NFT collection features seven animated statues with four rarity levels: Super Super Rare (SSR), Super Rare (SR), Rare (R), and Normal (N). All NFT statues are inspired by a unique moment in Cristiano Ronaldo’s life dating back to his childhood in Portugal.
The rarity levels give exclusive access to various perks that range from personal messages to complementary CR7 boxes and more.
“We believe the metaverse and blockchain are the future of the internet,” said Binance Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer He Yi. “We are honoured to collaborate with Cristiano to help more people understand blockchain and showcase how we are building Web3 infrastructure for the sports and entertainment industry.”
Ronaldo’s NFT collection launch also comes a few days after Manchester United announced its first NFT collection with Tezos. The English football giants agreed on a multi-year partnership deal with Tezos in May 2022.
With the Manchester United fan base divided about Ronaldo’s interview, it will be an interesting duel as the club and player battle for the same fanbase.
