Leading cryptocurrency exchange platform Binance has announced an exclusive, multi-year NFT partnership with football legend Cristiano Ronaldo. The company released a short video of the Portuguese star on Thursday via Twitter announcing his new venture.

Binance called it a unique opportunity for its community “to own an iconic piece of sports history and join CR7’s Web3 community.”

The company “will launch a global promotion aiming to give Ronaldo’s fans an introduction to Web3 with a compelling entry point into the world of NFTs.”

“Binance and Cristiano Ronaldo will create a series of NFT collections for sale exclusively on the Binance NFT platform. The first NFT collection will be released later this year and feature designs created in collaboration with Ronaldo,” Binance wrote in a statement announcing the partnership on its website.

This is Cristiano Ronaldo’s first public announcement about venturing into Web3. Earlier this year, Bloomberg cited sources that claimed the Manchester United forward was among investors backing Cricket NFT Marketplace FanCraze in a $100 million fundraising.

However, today’s announcement of an exclusive NFT partnership with Binance puts those initial reports to doubt.

The sports industry has been one of the earliest adopters of non-fungible tokens technology, with the NBA’s partnership with Dapper Labs for the NBA Top Shot NFT sparking a wave of NFT collaborations between athletes and Web3 companies.

Ronaldo joins his footballing nemesis Lionel Messi, who collaborated with Ethernity to launch the Messiverse NFT collection.

Other top footballers deeply engaged with NFTs include Brazilian superstar Neymar, French star Kyllian Mbappe, and Barcelona’s Dani Alves, among others.

In the short announcement video, Cristiano Ronaldo said: “I am delighted to announce my partnership with Binance. Together we’re going to change the NFT game and take football to the next level,” adding “and this is just the beginning.”

The community reacted positively with one Twitter user @themooncarl writing, “Binance is a great role model in crypto.

Another user @officialtravlad expressed optimism about the potential impact it could have on the industry writing: “This could start the next bull run alone, CR7 is the most followed social media sportsman ever.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Instagram has more than 458 million followers with only the Instagram official account having a higher follower count. He also has over 100 million followers on Twitter and Facebook.

Ronaldo posted the same video on his social media platforms urging his followers to join him to change the NFT game with Binance.
