Quick take:

  • MetaMask will be the first external wallet integration of Coinbase Pay.
  • Web3 developers looking to integrate Coinbase Pay into their dApps can apply for access to the SDK.
  • Coinbase Pay enables developers to offer an easy and secure way for users to buy crypto and transfer it to a wallet or dApp.

Coinbase announced on Thursday that it is expanding Coinbase Pay, a wallet funding widget, to the broader crypto ecosystem by enabling web3 developers and businesses to integrate it.

Coinbase Pay was launched on Mar 16 for Coinbase users to fund their Coinbase Wallet from the Chrome browser extension. The widget was created to simplify the process of funding a self-custody wallet by eliminating multiple steps including switching between apps and manually transferring funds.

Customers can also use their existing crypto balances or purchase new crypto with the payment information saved to their Coinbase accounts, such as debit cards and bank accounts.

With the expansion, Web3 developers can now integrate Coinbase Pay into their dApps. This enables developers to offer an easy and secure way for users to buy crypto and transfer it to a wallet or dApp. Web3 developers looking to integrate Coinbase Pay into their dApps can contact Coinbase to apply for access to the SDK.

Coinbase said that developers who integrate Coinbase Pay can “increase exposure and adoption of their product amongst Coinbase’s 98M customers.”

“With Coinbase Pay, businesses and developers don’t need to worry about verifying users with Coinbase accounts, who have already passed Coinbase’s robust KYC and fraud checks. Coinbase can handle fraud claims and customer support cases on your behalf,” wrote Prakash Hariramani, Senior Director, Product Management, and Bipul Sinha, Senior Product Manager at Coinbase, in a blog post.

Currently, Coinbase Pay is available in Coinbase Wallet and Coinbase NFT. MetaMask will be the first external wallet integration of Coinbase Pay, and the widget will be rolled out to Metamask’s 30 million users in the coming weeks.

Users can fund their non-custodial wallets such as Coinbase Wallet or MetaMask using existing Coinbase balances or saved payment information.
