Coinbase Names Fintech & Crypto Leader Katie Mitchell as New APAC Head of Policy Amid Regional Leadership Expansion

Coinbase has announced its new APAC Head of Policy, Katie Mitchell, as the company shuffles its leadership in the region. It is focusing on building for the long-term in the APAC region after securing an In-Principle Approval (IPA) from the Monetary Authority of Singapore to provide regulated Digital Payment Token services in the island state.

Mitchell was most recently an advisory board member at Emerging Payments Association Asia and the chair of the Singapore Fintech Association’s Web3 subcommittee. 

Prior to that, she was the global head of public policy and government engagement at Crypto.com, where she was the first hire to build and lead a global team of policy and engagement professionals. She also drove global external affairs and communications efforts pertaining to policy issues.

Her vast experience in fintech and public policy also included a role as VP and global head of public policy at Nium, Southeast Asia’s first B2B fintech unicorn. Her fintech career began at Visa, where she held various roles over her decade-long tenure, including strategy and execution for APAC government relations and head of global strategic initiatives and government relations. 

Mitchell will lead Coinbase’s work with policymakers in the APAC region while Hassan Ahmed, Coinbase’s Singapore country director, will continue to lead the company’s efforts in the country. 

Coinbase’s Australia country director John O’Loghlen will expand his role to include regional managing director of APAC. He will lead the company’s focused approach in the region in 2023. Additionally, he was recently appointed to the board of Blockchain Australia, he country’s leading industry network for businesses implementing or evaluating blockchain technology.

Besides focusing on making inroads in the APAC region, Coinbase is also expanding its operations to the EMEA region, having recently made four new appointments to its leadership team in Europe.
