The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) is celebrating its 60th birthday with a retrospective exhibition on The Sandbox. It would be the CFDA’s first foray into the metaverse.

Named “Fashioning the Shades of American Design,” the exhibition will feature 60 American fashion looks. from the last 60 years, curated by fashion historian and Assistant Curator of Fashion of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Darnell-Jamal Lisby.

Some of the 60 looks, which have been voxelised, include a grunge outfit from Marc Jacobs’ spring 1993 collection and Dapper Dan’s 1980s designs for Eric B & Rakim, among others.

The exhibition was conceptualised by creative consultancy 5th Column. “Think of it as a mini MET exhibition in the metaverse with beautiful images and scenes recreated in a voxelized form,” 5th Column founder and CEO Akbar Hamid told Forbes. He added that the goal was to “bring in the existing fashion community but also to reach the gaming community and introduce them to these brands.”

A collection of seven commemorative 1/1 NFTs representing contemporary American brands such as Coach, Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Vivienne Tam, Wes Gordon for Caroline Herrera and Willy Chavaria will also be displayed at the exhibition.

Vivienne Tam’s NFT artwork features a traditional Chinese dress featuring Bored Ape motifs. All of the seven NFTs will be put on auction from Dec 12-16 on CFDA.bnv.me, a week before the exhibition opens. Opening bids start at $15,000, but the NFTs come with utilities including fashion show invites and meet-and-greets with fashion designers.

Tommy Hilfiger’s NFT includes an all-expenses paid trip to the brand’s upcoming fashion show and a personalised shopping package of five items curated by Hilfiger himself, while Coach is offering a physical handbag, a tour of its archives, and holiday event access.

The NFTs were created in partnership with Web3 fashion platform Brand New Vision. CFDA has also partnered with MoonPay to enable buyers to pay with credit/debit cards.
