Luxury car manufacturer, Bentley, is making its first foray into Web3 with its upcoming NFT drop of the genesis Bentley NFT collection. The collection is limited to only 208 pieces and is scheduled for September this year.

The number 208 is significant to Bentley as it is both the top speed of its fastest Grand Tourer (the Continental GT Speed) and the total production run of the iconic R-Type Continental of 1952 – the car that inspired the modern Bentley design DNA.

The genesis Bentley NFT will be created by Bentley’s design team and the artwork will be revealed following the drop in September. With this first drop, Bentley is taking a long-term approach to expand its reach in the Web3 ecosystem.

Bentley’s NFT drop will be an integral first step into Web3 space as the car manufacturer has plans to explore other digital platforms, including NFCs (non-fungible chips), online gaming, metaverse applications, and the use of blockchain technology across the organisation.

Owners of a Bentley NFT will be treated to exclusive community opportunities, rewards and unique utilities to be announced soon.

“Bentley customers are living their lives online, purchasing luxury goods with digital currency, and establishing businesses in the Metaverse. We’ve always engaged our customers where they explore their passions, and today that means being present in digital marketplaces and offering NFT assets. We’ve seen how NFTs have raised the profiles of both art and artist, and we believe the same can happen in the luxury automotive space,” said board member for sales and marketing, Alain Favey.

The Bentley collection will be minted on Polygon due to its recently attained carbon neutral status and its pledge to go carbon negative by the end of this year. This means that all Bentley NFTs will be carbon neutral.

Bentley placed importance on sustainability for its first step into Web3 as all its vehicles will be fully battery-electric by 2030 in its aim to achieve end-to-end carbon neutrality in the same year.

Proceeds from the NFT sales will further Bentley’s philanthropic efforts and accelerate support for students interested in engineering, design, and manufacturing, all areas where Bentley requires new talent annually. Bentley also plans to support organisations working to increase sustainability efforts, especially in the transportation sector.

Other car companies that have recently taken their first steps into Web3 include Chevrolet, Acura, Lamborghini and Alfa Romeo
