Italian professional football club, AC Milan, has announced that it is launching its first-ever NFT project. The Club will be putting up a limited-edition 3D NFT of Rossoneri jersey from South Sudan for sale, with proceeds going to Fondazione Milan to support their charitable initiatives across the globe, including alleviating the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

The NFT was created on Fansea, a new NFT platform for AC Milan’s digital collectibles. Fans will be able to purchase one or more of the only 75,817 certified pieces of the 3D NFT at €45 each, from Apr 19 onwards. The number of pieces available represents the capacity of the San Siro stadium.

“This is a special moment for the Club as it embarks on a journey in a new territory in the name of charity. It is in AC Milan’s nature to explore new innovative ways to engage with its international fanbase of over 500 million people, whilst spreading the positive values of sport, so we are proud to be able to combine these two different sides of our Club into one project,” said AC Milan chief revenue officer Casper Stylsvig.

Fans can access the NFT they have purchased on the Fansea app once it launches on Apr 29.

The NFT represents a torn jersey from the 2016/17 season discovered by Danish war photographer Jan Grarup during a trip to South Sudan to document the effects of the severe floods in the country.

Grarup met a young boy wearing an AC Milan jersey that had evidently been repeatedly repaired and stitched together. He then swapped the AC Milan jersey for a new one with the boy and donated the jersey to the football club.

AC Milan ultimately put the jersey on display in the Mondo Milan museum at Casa Milan – the Rossoneri’s HQ – in a new exhibition dedicated to the educational and social projects implemented by Fondazione Milan. Later, the football club and Fondazione Milan also made a donation to UNICEF, active in South Sudan to guarantee all children their right to a childhood.

AC Milan has partnered with Crypto trading platform Bitmex for this charity project by making a donation to Fondazione Milan through the purchase of a large number of the NFT. Additionally, Bitmex is giving trading discounts to the first 10,000 fans who pre-order the NFT.

Other football clubs that have launched NFTs in recent weeks include AS Monaco and Liverpool FC.
